With this building, the architects, including two students from Peter Smithson’s class at the AA, realized the “streets in the sky” idea from their teacher’s “Golden Lane” project: The apartments are accessible from several open access routes. Since the site is on a sharp slope, these broad decks each have direct access to ground level. As a result, they function better than those in the Smithsons’ Robin Hood Gardens project later.
