Starting in 1954, New Haven was completely transformed in order to create what called a “model city” The parking garage was part of that program. Its sculptural character was intended to convey a sense of modernity and mobility. Moreover, the building was Rudolph’s first project made completely in exposed cast-in-place concrete. A comparison with the similar Preston Bus Station is interesting, whereby the latter was made using prefab parts.
