After a severe earthquake in 1966 Uzbekistan was supported extensively by its neighboring countries. The People's Friendship Palace was built to commemorate these events. Among other things it houses a large concert hall. The design in the shape of a temple uniquely combines traditionally oriental forms with machine aesthetics. The international brutalist design language is thus being combined with aspects of local identity, which is characteristic for Uzbek architecture at that time.
