To turn Shiraz University into the most modern Iranian university, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi commissioned the University of Pennsylvania in 1960 with the setting up of a structure and teaching concept similar to a US campus. Accordingly, the American architect Minoru Yamasaki was entrusted with the general planning. … The idea of architecture as a machine was intended as a symbol of the modernization of a society.
