In the Black Forest highlands, Hornberg's Catholic Community Center with its distinctive church sits prominently in a valley between terraced built-up slopes. The roofscape of the otherwise block-like church building is enlivened by the attached tower with its semicircular ground plan, by protruding mono-pitched light shafts, and by tubular skylights that cast the sky's brightness into the dim interior onto the central altar. In addition to the church, the grounds of the community center include a kindergarten, a sisters' house, a rectory with library, and large community rooms. Cultural life was an important aspect in architect Rainer Disse's design: Thus, he installed a hall for theater and exhibitions, rooms for choir rehearsals and meetings, and a play terrace for everyone. The forecourt with its tiered water features was also arranged to provide areas for open-air theater.
