After a long period in which the postal traffic was handled in a makeshift manner via Munich's main train station, the Munich Package Post Office was built in the 1960s with an own roofed train station. On 20,000m², it has 15 platforms whose tracks are connected to the general railroad network and offers enough space for loading and unloading packages regardless of the weather. The track hall is a wide-span shell structure 124 meters long, with a folded sheet structure composed of 1,600 precast concrete elements spanning a 148-meter arc. The lamellar structure on the roof made it possible to save on material and weight, while creating a sculptural appearance of the building. The long sides of the hall are closed off to the ground by the arched roof, the front side is closed off by a glass wall. This allows sufficient light to enter the oversized building. At the time of execution, it was the widest-span hall in the world made of precast elements.
