The architect Wilhelm Schlegtendal designed the Church of the Redeemer in Erlangen as a sculptural exposed concrete solitaire. The two-shell building gains its peculiar shape from the fact that the church interior is enclosed – as if by two guarding hands – by two curved walls. The walls, however, do not form a circle, but describe a rather triangle-like ground plan. Where the walls would meet, a gap is left on one side for the entrance to the church, and on the other for a large window located above the sacristy. The church interior is 12.5m high and is capped with a roof at this height. The concrete walls, however, rise above it, at the highest point to almost 18m. A small cross is located here. The largely closed concrete façade is interrupted in some places by grid-like light and window holes.
