The State Archives of Baden-Württemberg were built on a 3500 square meter site. According to Horst Linde's overall urban planning concept, the building had to be kept low in relation to the surrounding historical buildings. As a result, the archive areas were largely set up underground with three basement floors: two purely storage floors, and one floor that contains restoration workshops and technical rooms as well. From the street level, the archive appears as a flat-roofed, two-story building on a rectangular floor plan, from the center of which the area of the user room and the repertory protrude by half a story with a skylight band. The upper floor with its exposed concrete façade overhangs the smaller first floor with exposed red brickwork, and is supported by round columns. The copper covering of the roof in return closes the upper part of the exposed concrete façade.
